Boards and Committees

I have the pleasure of sitting on a number of Recreation and Service Boards. Most of these are jointly attended by one or two other Councillors, possibly Town Councillors and appointed members of the public.

Westwinds Communities

This is a favorite of mine. Westwinds is the Compamy that is in charge of Senior housing and affordable housing. They look after numerous Lodges, apartments, in several areas throughout the County. The Board is made up of Westwinds staff, Councillors from Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Towns of Okotoks and High River, Foothills County, Longview and members at large of the public.

A wonderful group of people who take great pride in working with our seniors and others within our community. Their latest feat of amazement was the grand re-opening of the Medicine Tree Manor in High River which was badly damaged in the 2013 flood and then razed by fire after being rebuilt. Perseverance does not begin to describe the commitment of these folks!

County Cemeteries

Councillors Castell and McHugh join me as the representatives for this Board. The County oversees five cemeteries in the region including Blackie, Cayley, Gladys Union, Davisburg and Pine Creek. Our focus the last few years was the installation of Columbarium's at each site. I recommend a visit to Blackie and Cayley as the "grain elevator" Columbarium's are spectacular. Hats off to our staff for their excellent support and continued efforts to beautify these final resting places for our loved ones.

Foothills Cemetery

I have become an alternate on this Board because of its correlation with the Foothills Cemeteries. The Foothills has just completed a rather large and beautiful expansion. This Cemetery is just west of Black Diamond.

Dunbow Recreation Board

Councillor Waldorf from Division 6 and Councillor McHugh from Division 7 head up this Board and I am the alternate.

DRB funds numerous recreation projects within our three Divisions.

Northwest Recreation Board

This Board consists of 3 Municipal Councillors and numerous public volunteers. Millarville and the West country is where most of our efforts go. Again, through generous support from the Seaman family, we are building an outdoor field facility consisting of ball diamonds, soccer pitches, walking trails, etc. The Millarville Sports Association are an integral part of the program.

Priddis / Red Deer Lake Recreation Board

Another great board dealing with sports involving these two communities. The RDL hall is one of the programs we are working on for some renovations. Their 60+ acre park is a wonderful spot to get away from it all. Priddis has great community support and is part of a huge minor outdoor hockey league.

Intermunicipal Committees

Within our Municipality we must be conscious of our bordering neighbors. These boards are a result of that. We must have a plan in place to respect our growth in relation to our surroundings.

  • Calgary Intermunicipal Committee
  • Okotoks Intermunicipal Committee
  • Rockyview Intermunicipal Committee

Historical Committee

This is a fun one! As my family has a large history in the area, I was extremely proud to appointed to this board. Our past is important, and I will work hard to make sure it is documented. There are over 200 historical school signs erected within the MD marked by brass plaques. And, if you are into Geo- Caching, look behind some of those plaques when you see them.

Sheep River Health Trust

I have recently been added to the Board of Trustees as an alternate.

Community Futures

Also new to me this year, this Board is a great support to small business in the area.

Development Appeal Board

I have joined this Board as an alternate for now, as I believe there is a lot to learn to give these important sessions full attention.

Friends of Champion Park

I stepped into this Committee after the unfortunate passing of Councillor Larry Spilak. Larry was passionate about the park, and I am happy to continue his work.

Calgary Metropolitan Region Board

This board was announced by the Provincial Government to promote long term sustainability of the metropolitan region. It will deal with growth planning, regional services delivery, and infrastructure delivery.

There are 10 Municipalities within this board including:

City of Calgary, City of Airdrie, City of Chestermere, Town of Cochrane, Town of High River, Town of Okotoks, Town of Strathmore, Rockyview County, M.D. of Foothills, and a portion of Wheatland County. Although I am only an alternate, I intend to be present in all the meetings of this very important Board as it will determine how we grow as communities.

Also, I serve as a director on the DeWinton Community Association. A passionate group of people in charge of the DeWinton Hall and surrounding area.

Newly formed, is a group of local DeWinton residents who are concerned with the environmental side of things, including the large Riparian area on the east side of town. I will assist this group as much as possible.

The following three boards have not met yet. I will update as we go.
